Securing a strategic communications leader for BASE

We began working with the voice of the Home Entertainment Industry in the UK - British Association for Screen Entertainment (BASE) - when they were looking to engage a new Senior Communications Manager.

As a small company, the hiring team needed support on how best to position the role and navigate the communications talent market. Specialist recruiter, Matthew Stevenson, guided them throuhgout the recruitment process.

Securing a strategic communications leader for BASE

The story of BASE

BASE is the body representing the home entertainment industry in the UK. Their members include both digital and physical entertainment, occupying the broad and evolving space between theatrical cinema and broadcast television.

As a small but influential organisation, the team relies on communications to drive industry awareness, manage media relationships, and coordinate campaigns across a wide range of stakeholders. When a long-standing team member moved on, the organisation needed to find a successor capable of maintaining momentum while also bringing a more proactive approach to PR.

Challenge: Replacing a long-standing communications leader in a small team

BASE needed to appoint a Senior Communications Manager who could operate effectively in a lean organisation. The role required a broad skillset, capable of balancing both strategic thinking and hands-on delivery.

Key requirements included:

  • Developing a proactive PR strategy
  • Managing communications across industry stakeholders
  • Supporting the organisation’s campaigns and events
  • Operating comfortably across both strategy and execution

Because of the small team structure, cultural fit and versatility were just as important as technical communications expertise.

Solution: Balancing speed with execution

The organisation needed to hire quickly following the departure of the previous role holder. Matthew worked closely with CEO, Liz Bales, to refine the brief and ensure the role was positioned effectively to attract the right calibre of candidates.

He delivered a structured search process, including:

  • Communications talent market map
  • Salary benchmarking and market insight
  • Targeted shortlist of candidates
  • A structured interview process

Weekly update calls ensured the team remained informed and confident throughout the search.

Result: An excellent communications hire

BASE successfully appointed a Senior Communications Manager, who joined the organisation in July.

The hire brings the strategic communications capability required to evolve the organisation’s PR approach from reactive to proactive, while also maintaining the hands-on delivery required in a small team environment.
