What does a Solution Engineer do?

Part of the sales team, Solutions Engineers recognise and action opportunities to improve client's use of your product or service.

This client-facing role bridges the gap between the technical and sales teams. They ensure that clients understand each solution your product offers and spots any sales opportunities. Ultimately, their main aim is to ensure that all technology solutions meet client expectations and solve their challenges.

Key responsibilities

While the role might look different in each organisation, the core responsibilities stay the same. The average day for a Solutions Engineer might include:

  • Creating solutions strategies: Understand the product inside-out to create impactful solutions to client's problems. 
  • Communicating regularly with customers: Act as a trusted advisor for clients, presenting opportunities to add value to their business. 
  • Understanding pain points: Ask probing questions to understand potential pain points and showcase the solutions you offer.
  • Leading product demonstrations and presentations: Effortlessly present your product to audiences and lead training sessions.
  • Working across teams: Collaborate with the commercial, product and marketing teams, sharing insight and ideas with each other.


Skills and requirements

The skills you need to be a Solutions Engineer are:

  • Strong technical expertise, including an understanding of AI and machine learning
  • Prior experience in a technical sales role, with a strong track record in delivering excellent sales processes
  • Excellent communications skills, with the ability to simplify technical solutions
