The story of Redwood Bank

Established in 2017, Redwood Bank was created by Jonathan Rowland and Gary Wilkinson to build a flexible and personable business bank focused on lending to SMEs. Over the years, they have increased their product offerings, increased their customer base and won numerous awards. 

In 2024, they onboarded their Head of Marketing, Michelle Monck. With continued growth plans in place, they needed to bring on marketing talent to execute their strategy. Having partnered with our recruitment consultants in previous searches, Michelle got in touch for support with hiring into her team at Redwood. 

Challenge: Building the foundations of a marketing team with a limited talent pool

Specialist financial services marketing recruiter, Hannah Glazebrook, was briefed on a Marketing Manager role. They were searching for someone who could provide support across all channels and establish the foundations of the function. 

The search brought one key challenge – location. The role was based in Hertfordshire with a requirement to be in the office a couple of days a week, limiting the talent pool. Leveraging our expansive marketing network, Hannah was able to promptly deliver a shortlist of candidates who would suit the role and were able to reach the business in Letchworth. 

Solution: Re-scoping and targeting search

Following the initial search, the hiring team realised that the job description wasn’t right for their current stage of growth. Initially a Senior Manager job, we quickly took the role back out to market, repositioning it at Marketing Manager level and creating a refreshed shortlist. From the outset, the successful candidate stood out. 

Throughout the process, we worked closely with the Head of Marketing to refine the brief, advised on market realities around location and flexibility, and kept communication consistent. By adapting quickly to changes and focusing on quality over volume, we were able to progress the process smoothly. 

Result: A strong first hire with impact

Redwood Bank successfully hired their new Marketing Manager, who made an immediate impact within their first three months, supporting team expansion and strengthening marketing delivery across channels.
